Hi, I made my first candle last night using 3.5 oz soy wax and essential oils. I used a combination of 64 drops sweet orange EO, 24 drops of Rose Geranium EO, 24 drops of Lavender EO, and 26 drops of patchouli EO - all scents associated with emotional balance. The finished candle smelled acceptably well for the first time out. However, when I lit it two unexpected things occurred
1. I couldn't smell the scent any more.
2. After about an hour, I noticed that my mouth felt coated with something unpleasant. I extinguished the candle - and it has taken the rest of the day for the unpleasantness to go away.
Many years ago I put some EO in a diffuser and remember having the same sensation in my mouth - I never used the diffuser again.
I welcome all suggestions here - I've been dialoging with Will most of the day and he seems baffled.
eo's in soy
you can use eo's in soy wax. in fact several large candle companies (ergo in particular) primarily use eo's to get their wonderful aromas. the trick is adding the eo right before you pour the wax (around 100 or lower) and make sure it is thouroughly incorporated. the first time i tried lavender eo in a candle i was up till 3 am. i found out later that initially lavender has a soothing effect but in large quantities it becomes a stimulant!! lol...needless to say i was very careful after that. i would add about half as much eo as fo and possible blend the two together so the candle has a good fragrance and the effects of the eo at the same time.
EOs with Soy Wax
This straight EO is very very potent and when put into a candle will burn up immediatly. You need to be using fragrance oils which blends EO with other compounds such as soy oil.
I guess I need more specific information. I don't want to use FOs, if at all possible. Are you saying that is the only way this can be done? I can certainly dilute the EO with soy oil, will that solve the problem? Would something like Vybar help me. I'm using KySoy 125 for the wax - I don't think that is the problem. The original problem in my mouth, we determined was because I used some old EOs which were probably extracted using some sort of a petroleum-based solvent. I tried a 2nd time with newer oils, and didn't have the mouth problem, but still the scent combusted immediately and there was no throw. I'm glad you had a good laugh.
Soy & Essential Oils Problems
 I'm having a hard time holding back the laughter I feel inside. From what you are telling me you used straight essiential oil in your candle and alot of it. This straight EO is very very potent and when put into a candle will burn up immediatly. You need to be using fragrance oils which blends EO with other compounds such as soy oil. As far as the taste in your mouth it could be related to a reaction to one of the EO or you could be using one of the nasty brand soy waxes. I hope this helps.
