Mushrooming
:D I use the 62-52-18P wicks and they have always mushroomed on me. These are the biggest non metal wicks I could find for my 3 1/2 in jars. I do believe that the mushrooming produces a wider flame and helps provide a full melt pool. My scent throw is good and I've never had a customer complain yet about the mushroom look. The only thing I don't like is the extra amount of smoke they emite when blown out. But after a minute, the smoke and odor is gone, so not a big deal.

mushrooming
 Ok I am pretty sure the mushrooming effect as it is called is almost needed for the heat to be able to reach out further and create a larger pool. So I don't really understand why people would have a problem with this effect. When I was testing different wicks for my candles I looked for three things from the wick. 1. Will the wick allow my wax to pool to the edge of the container. 2. Does the wax create black soot 3. Does the wick allow for a great scent throw.
P.S. Why do people use 2 wicks in their candles it cuts down on the life and scent throw of a candle?
P.S. Give the mushroom ball some love or trim it.

burn pool size
A side to side burn pool that is 1/4 inch deep or even 1/2 inch deep at the most is the desired effect over the life of the candle. As for safety, there are too many variables to address that. redmaple www.redmapleenterprises.com www.stores.ebay.com/art-landscape
Burn Pool
This is a little off the subject but not much. You mentioned that your container candles burn side-to-side in the glass. I've seen conflicting reports as to whether or not I should choose a wicking that will provide that large of a burn pool.
So, my question is: Is it or is it not safe to have a burn pool in a container candle that does not leave extra wax on the side of the glass (tunnel)?
Thanks ahead of time for the help. I really love the forum here it has helped me alot.
mushrooming
The mushrooming is caused by unburnt melted wax and fragrance being drawn up through the wick and "capping" on top. It's pretty common with all-cotton wicks, as they act like a straw and pull melted wax and fragrance oil up to the top of the wick.
Whatever isn't burned turns into the mushroom.
You might try using a paper core or zinc core wick if you don't like the mushroom, or cut back on the fragrance oil or try a smaller wick.
The mushroom won't hurt anything as long as you don't let it get too big. As the mushroom gets bigger the candle starts to burn less efficiently.
When your candle is cool, just take a tissue and press (don't pull or bend or twist) the mushroom off, and discard the "cap" pieces.
