microwaving gold brand 464

I am wanting to buy gold brand 464 soy wax. I was wondering if you can melt it in the microwave? If so, to what temperature, and what is the best fragrance oils and dyes to use. Also, what temperature to add the fragrance and dye, and what temperature to pour.

Thanks for any and all help. I have made soy candles a couple of times, and they frosted real bad and caved in at the wick. I purchased the soy wax I used from a seller on ebay. I want a good strong scent throw on the candles I make, so any advice any one can give me would be greatly appreciated.

464

Hello Marlene, I use this wax and it can be melted in the microwave. I have found it faster and easier though to use a presto pot. You can buy them in the store but need to modify it so you can just turn the spigot and the wax flows out (once melted). I got mine on ebay (already modified) for about 45.00 (cheapest I found online already modified). I melt the wax to 175 (do not melt above 200 per instructions from manufacturer). I add scent around 150 and color right before I pour. I pour at 125. I have found that if you pour lower than this temp for this particular wax the tops mess up and you will have to go back later and fix the tops. But at 125 the tops are perect and smooth. Frosting now is another issue. I have found the darker colors frost the worst. There seems to be no away around the frosting unless you want to add parrafin which would no longer make them all soy. I have heard that you can add some of the parrafin and it takes care of the frosting, however, I have not and will not add parrafin to my candles so I can not tell you for sure if this works. As for the scents, I only buy my scents from reputable candle supply companies. Buying the stuff at say Hobby Lobby is a waste of money as the scent is so watered down the scent is very weak. Some of the companies I buy from are Alabaster Candle Supply and Candle Science (both carry 464). Their scents are pure and uncut which will give you more for your money not to mention a much better scent throw (especially if you will sell these). I also get my color from these companies. I have used the dye blocks as well as the liquid. The liquid is easier as you don't have to cut it, but, I do still use the blocks on some as I can't get the color I want on some of my candles with the dye. I hope this helps. Good luck!! PS check to see if you have any reputable supply companies in your area (save on shipping).

HELP!!!

I switched to the 464 and bought all sizes of ECO wicks and used the 4, 6, 8 & 10 ECO wicks in a 2.5 (mouth) size jar...none of the candles would burn, they all went out. I let the candles cure for 48 hour before burning. What did I do wrong? Does ANYONE have ANY idea what wick I should be using for 464? I used christmas splendor, patchouli, nag champa, hot apple pie and nana's apple fragrance. I use to use joy wax until she changed the wax. The joy wax was leaving a lot of soot and was really hard to work with so I know she changed something. I really like the way the 464 has a great scent throw (until the candles went out). HELP PLEASE!!!!!

Re: HELP!!!

I have found that with the 464, I always have to wick-up from what is normally suggested. With the 2.5"-3" diameter, I am using the ECO 14 and it burns evenly. I still haven't quite gotten my pour temperature with 464 right, though. I still have to blast the tops with a heat gun to even it out.

heating jars

Thank you so much for this information. I just received my GB 464 wax, wicks, dye and fragrance from candle science yesterday. Just wondering if you need to heat your jars before you pour this wax.

Also, does this wax have good hot and cold throw?

Thank you,
Marlene

heating jars

I have done both heated and not heated the jars. I have found that it didn't make any difference in the outcome whether they were heated or not. I wash my jars in my dishwasher and let dry. I then go ahead and wick and then put them back in the box and cover to keep dust getting inside until I am ready to use the jars. I make so many candles that I have to go ahead and do all this prior to actually making the candles. When I am ready to make candles I remove from the box so they sit at room temp for a little bit before I pour into them.
The 464 has excellent hot and cold throw. I have something new to try regarding frosting, I am getting ready to try this and if it works I'll pass it on. What are you using to center and hold the wicks in place while the candle(s) are curing? Good luck to you, hope all your candles turn out beautifully. Just out of curiousity are you making these for yourself or do you plan to sell? I can pass on some of my best sellers if you are interested.
