How much wax do you lose in melting?

Hi there!

First off Will, I want to thank you so much for hosting this website and forum. Lots of info here for a beginner.

My husband and I are tossing around the idea of making soy candles, and one of the tings we would like to know is how much, if any, wax is lost in the heating process? How many oz can we expect out of a lb of wax? Thanks so much!

Sarah

weight loss of melted wax, None, you gain

You do not lose any wax when it is melted. Matter of fact is that 16 oz of solid paraffin wax will yield 20 oz of melted wax and 16 oz of soy wax will yield 18 oz when melted.
Many candle sites will offer this info to you.

1 fl oz doesn't = 1 oz

Remember that one dry oz (weight) is not the same as one fluid oz (volume)
That could be where you are getting mixed up with the ounces.

I have "lost" wax while pouring soy candles.

If you start out with a one pound bag of soy flakes and melt it and add your scent and your dye and then you attempt to fill two 8 oz. glass jars you will have two jars that are not "full" enough for it to appear to be a finished product. I have ended up having to melt down more soy flakes in order to properly fill the candle. This is a little frustrating because it can affect the color of both jars.

Thank you! I appreciate your response.

How much wax do you lose in melting?

16 oz equals 1 lb.
16 oz. solid wax equals 16 oz. liquid wax
When it melts down, it should be the same.
