Essential Oils?

Hi,

My question isn't really about fragrance oils, so I hope you can forgive me. I am interested in using Essential Oils in by soy candles. I have absoylutely no experience in using essential oils. Heck, I bearly have experience making soy candles, but that is beside the point. I would really like to use the essential oils. Do you have information on this? Like how many drops to use in say a 10oz size glass container? I would really apreciate any tips/suggestions/instructions you might have!

Thanks,
Soyenchanted

I don't have experience using essential oils... however I do have some oils on the way from a supplier in India.

It may be some time before I can get back to you on this, so hopefully another will read you post and be able to help!

Thanks for your question!

wjreece,

Well, I may just have to invest in some kind of Aromatherapy book and do some experimenting. Let me know when you do start working wth the essential oils. I would be interested in your findings.

Thanks,

Essential Oils?

wjreece,

i'm new to candle-making and have been wanting to experiment with essential oils as well. how much oil do you tend to put in your candles? i'm assuming you would need less than a normal fragrance oil, but am not sure.

thanks,
elly

Essential Oils?

After some experimenting, I have been pretty pleased with the quality of the essential oils I have gotten from overseas. For Christmas, I made a peppermint and cinnamon pillar (3x9) of each fragrance and the scent throw was pretty nice! Oh... clove and cinnamon for for the Thanksgiving centerpiece. :)

Sorry... thought an update was overdue.

Essential Oils?

Thanks Boutique for the informative reply. I was wondering the same thing myself if EO will work with soy candles. Glad I read your post. I have a small collection of EO left over from my shea body butter days and had considered trying them in the candles. Now I won't waste the EO :)

Essential Oils?

My experience using EO's (essential oils) in soy has been discouraging.

EO"s just do not hold up in candle wax (I understand this is the same with paraffin too).

I have done Patchouli, Lavender, Rosemary, Cedarwood, Eucalyptus, Lemon Lime and Orange EOS with mixed results.

The only ones that have held up over time are the Eucalyptus (and the Eucalyptus-Camphor and the Eucalyptus-Lemon) , and Orange Oil candles all the others have lost their scent within a few months.

The Patchouli is especially discouraging because it is so strong out of the bottle and when used in other products (lotions for example).

For whatever reason EOs just evaporate out of wax and leave you with "wax" scented wax and a faint remnant of their former fragrant selves.

I have gone to mixing EO's with a matching FO with pretty good results. THe EO enhances the FO fragrance and seems to hold on better.

It is too bad as I have a couple of clients who want only essential oils but it just doesn't work.

Some really popular scents are actually better in the FO version such as Sandalwood - and some wonderful floral scents are just not possible in and EO such as Lily of the Valley and Violet
